Past tenses were explained in this unit. There are four past tenses: past simple, past continuous, past perfect, and past perfect continuous.
1) Past simple
Form:
Affirmative form: Subject + past simple form of the verb
Negative form: Subject + did + not + base form of the verb
Question: Did + subject + base form of the verb
Usages:
1) Asking about time.
2) If an action took place at a given time in the past.
3) When the action took place at a definite time although this time is not mentioned.
Past continuous
Form:
Affirmative: Subject + was/were + verb + ing
Negative: Subject + was/were + not + verb + ing
Question: Was/ were + subject + verb + ing
Usages:
1) For interrupted actions in the past.
2) For actions that began before a certain time and probably continued after it.
3) For describing gradual development that happened in the past.
Past perfect
Form:
Affirmative: Subject + had + past participle
Negative: Subject + had + not + past participle
Question: Had + subject + past participle
Usage:
We use the past perfect tense for actions that took place before another action in the past.
Past perfect continuous
Form:
Affirmative: subject + had + been + verb + ing
Negative: subject + had + not + been + verb + ing
Question: Had + subject + been + verb + ing
Usage:
To describe actions in the past that had been going continuously up to the past moment that we are talking about.
