This unit provided very good examples of what not to do when teaching a class. It is a very effective teaching tool because no teacher would ever want to teach a class as demonstrated in the first lesson! Hopefully!
It was very confusing for the students when they were not given clear explanations or instructions in Lesson 1. They seemed interested and willing to learn regardless of the confusion and irritation of the teacher. The teacher further added to the confusion by just asking more questions. Not much correction seemed to go on and during the pronunciation drill it wasn't possible for the teacher to hear individual pronunciations.
When some students arrived late there was no welcome just irritation. Also during one activity in the Activate stage it was very chaotic with the teacher really not caring and also being quite dismissive of some of the students.
Lesson 2 was a refreshing change, the teacher introduced himself to the class then went round and asked everyone for their name. He was enthusiastic and cheerful and spoke slowly and clearly.
Lesson 2 highlighted the importance of having an Engage Stage at the start of a lesson to encourage the students to think and speak in English. The introduction prompts written on the board were very useful for elicitating language. The grammar points in the Study phase were well explained and the teacher made sure that the students knew what to do before handing out any work sheets. The Activate phase was explained very well and the mill drill exercise was well organised. A good lesson!
