The chapter presented an overview of basic principles for effective language instruction, described nine methods for teaching ESL, and introduced a favored method, the "Engage-Study-Activate" method, as the one this course will use. The E-S-A method, as a way of conceptualizing the components of a lesson, was new to me, and I can appreciate how effective it will be. The lesson also went over the importance of using elicitation, getting students to come up with the concept or answer, rather than straight telling from the teacher, as much as possible, and it presented helpful basic concepts in how/when to provide various types of feedback/correction.
