We can assess student’s language level using three different ways: tutorials, evaluation by the students and tests. Tutorials means that teacher should spend some time to discuss with students about what they have done and if they have some question or difficulties with lessons. Evaluation by the students means that we should ask student’s what they think about lessons, grammar, is it to easy or difficult, etc. Tests are very convenient procedure and easy way for checking student’s language level. We have different types of tests: placement tests, progress tests, diagnostic tests, practice tests, general external examinations, Cambridge assessment. Through the placement test teachers can assess on what level of language knowledge are new students. These test start with simple questions and become progressively more difficult. Progress tests include balance of reading, writing, speaking and listening and these tests are useful to let teachers and students know what language items need more work. Diagnostic tests are like a placement tests and they are given at the start of the course to see what the students already know. Practice tests are preparation for external tests. General external examinations are TOEFL, IELTS, TOEIC. TOEFL is one test for all levels and it’s required by most US universities. IELTS is for students who needs to study or work where English is the language of communication. TOEIC is based on TOEFL test and it measures the ability of non-native English-speaking examines to use English in everyday working activities.
