This unit gives an overview of the two vital components of a classroom - the teacher and the learner, and the importance of interaction between the two. Teachers assume various roles depending on the situation. In addition to other duties they manage, assess, organize, prompt, participate, tutor and model. It's important that all of these components take place at the appropriate times during the learning process. Good teachers know this. Good teachers are also patient, kind, enthusiastic, know their subject matter, motivate and involve all of their students, and genuinely love their job. "Good" learners are basically willing to listen, experiment, ask questions, accept correction and think about their own way of learning. There are all types of learners: children, adolescents, adults. Adults generally have more learning and life experience and are self-motivated but they also can be more nervous. Younger learners tend to be more open-minded to new teaching styles, but may not be as motivated because it usually isn't their choice to be in the classroom. They can also create a need for more discipline in the classroom. Learners also come with cultural biases, varied levels of English proficiency ranging from beginning to advanced, and different motivations. Reasons for learning English include future job opportunities, schooling, travel, better grades, improved communication or a general interest in languages. There are all kinds of teachers and learners, but in the end, a teacher who cares about her students' success and a learner who really wants to learn is a winning combination.
