I learnt how important it is to put thought into lesson plans, be very purposeful about them, and incorporate many components into each one. Some people are not fortunate enough to be able to learn English by being immersed in it, so it is important to imitate that environment in the classroom as well as possible. There are numerous methodologies for teaching English, but all must focus on exposing the learner to as much English as possible and encouraging them to discover as much as they can on their own. All require a certain amount of input from the teacher, opportunities for communicative tasks and a low anxiety environment. The engage-study-activate model is the one we will be focusing on. It seems to offer a lot of teacher flexibility to me.
The engage part is to inspire the students to become interested and get involved in the lesson. There are a variety of ways to do this and it is important to vary them so it doesn't become boring or predictable. The study portion is when the students focus on the construction of the language, and the activate part is where students actually put the language to use. This unit gave many great suggestions for each of those phases; I really like the 'hands-on' ones. Teacher feedback is also very important with careful attention paid to when to do it and how, always keeping in mind the student's feelings. Feedback from students can also help the teacher to know how effective his or her lessons are. I am looking forward to putting all of this good information to use in designing my own lesson plans!
