This unit concentrated on pronunciation and phonology, including stress, rhythm and intonation (variation in spoken volume and pitch). Some of the techniques used to teach intonation are the nonsense exercise (saying made up words in different tones to convey different emotions), gestures, humming or singing and using the board to make upward or downward arrow to indicate rise and fall. The unit gave general rules for where stresses fall for different parts of speech. We also practiced with the phonetic alphabet.
