In this Unit, it explores grammar and parts of speech. Grammar help structure our language. It is quite challenging for me because my first language is a creole made up with English and I speak naturally/everyday speech in what I think make sense through my experiences. When I had my grammar class in my bachelor's degree, it was challenging for me because I only knew basic grammar for example, noun, pronoun, adjectives, adverb, verb and so on. This unit has helped me understand the broader categories within the basic concepts and act as a revision for me. In the following, I will briefly explain two parts of speech that was covered in the unit.
The unit covered noun, adjective, article, verbs, adverbs, gerunds, pronouns, preposition and conjunctions. It starts by explaining noun (people, place, things). There are 5 types of noun namely common, proper, compound, abstract and collective. There are countable nouns ( nouns that can be counted for example, keys ) and uncountable nouns (nouns that cannot be counted for example, water).
Secondly, I’ve learnt something new and interesting in the adjective section. I did not know that to describe something, there is a pattern in the sentence. The pattern to describe something begins with size, age, colour, material then noun for example, a big old yellow glass table. The interesting thing is when I describe something I do follow this pattern without knowing the actual rule. This makes it easier for students to practise to describe objects in their daily life.
To conclude, the unit has helped me understand different parts of speech and made it easier for me to teach grammar to my future students.
