In the unit Theories, Methods and Techniques, I have learnt different teaching theories, methods and specific teaching techniques. I have understood what needs to be done in different stages of a lesson and the motive behind each sections. This unit has helped me to plan my lesson plan in a more constructive way. While learning different theories and methods, I learnt about their advantages and disadvantages which helped me to cater my future students in a specific way. One of the highlights in this unit is learning about Engage, Study and Activate (ESA) by Jeremy Harmer. It is an effective teaching method that combines the element of the other teaching methods into one. This teaching method is separated into three stages namely, Engage, Study and Activate. In the Engage section, teacher treats it as a warm up for students and aims to arouse student’s interest (e.g. games) before going onto the second section. In the next section Study, it starts off by eliciting information from students and then followed by drilling for correcting the pronunciation of the language, if required. It also in cooperates activities for students where they will focus on the language that they are learning and how they are constructed. Students will have worksheets, groupworks and will go over their errors. Finally, the last stage Activate, this stage encourages students to use the language freely and in a communicate way. It focuses on the fluency and accuracy of the student’s language usage through different activities. These three stages are important and it balances the lesson together. These three element can be switched around and have multiple stages as long as it starts with engage and ends with activate. I will definitely use this method in my future lesson planning.
