One of the most informative and difficult chapter so far is Unit 13. It teaches pronunciation and phonology. I have learnt about intonation, stress, connected speech and the phonetic alphabet from the chapter. Intonation and stress brings colours to our speech and it sounds natural than speaking in a flat tone. Intonation is the volume and pitch in a whole sentence whereas stress deals with individual words. Intonation also conveys messages such as expressions and emphasises.
I have learnt something new from the chapter. I learnt sound joining. I did know that when we speak we often say the words together. There are four ways that sounds are joined together. They are linking, dropping, changing, and extra-lettering. The one I often use is linking for example, “whatdoyou want todo?”. and sound dropping, I silent the last sound of a word.
The unit also taught the phonetic alphabet, phonemic symbols, articulation and manner of articulation. These sounds are specific sounds which is easy to recognize what they pronounced like in a word.
