Unit 3 introduced how people naturally acquire their native language (L1) and how to duplicate that process in the classroom when students are learning English as a second (L2) or foreign language. There are many debates about which methods of teaching are the most effective, and this unit outlined the following methods: Grammar translation, Audio-linguistic, PPP, Task-based learning, Communicative Language Teaching, Community Language Learning, The Silent Way, Suggestopaedia, and The Lexical Approach. Finally, the unit introduced the Engage-Study-Activate (ESA) method that is endorsed by ITTT. This method was developed by Jeremy Harmer and is based on a combination of the previously mentioned methods. The ESA method specifically outlines what to teach where, and how, during a lesson and also when to correct student errors. There are some creative formulas for this lesson structure, such as the boomerang and patchwork models, and that flexibility allows for teachers to accurately adjust lessons as needed to meet his/her students' learning objectives and needs. The ESA model allows for teacher talk time, peer talk time, student self-correction, verbal and written language practice, and many other effective teaching strategies.
