Unit 5 introduced a general overview of the purpose and methods of the classroom. These included managing the physical space, including how the furniture (table and chairs) are arranged to maximize student participation and success, as well as managing the students. Every class and classroom will be different, no formula for table arrangement or group work will be the same, and depending on the lesson and teaching objectives, the teacher may need to make adjustments during the class session. This unit also emphasized the role of the teacher on a more specific level (not just managing the lesson). Some of the most important aspects of teaching include nonverbal interaction with the students, such as eye contact, gestures, position in the room, and standing vs. sitting. When planning lessons, it is important to consider how your physical presence in the room can influence learning and confidence in your students. Lastly, this unit discussed viewing your classroom as a small community and ways that teachers can make each student feel comfortable to learn and make mistakes, as well as establish rapport as a professional and language model/guide for your students. These techniques included some preventative measures such as establishing trust and respect from your students, as well as consciously pairing groups and partners together to build community and partnerships between students, and of course having fair and clear behavior expectations.
