Unit 6 introduced English past tenses including Past Simple, Past Continuous, Past Perfect, and Past Perfect Continuous. The system and structure of the past tenses is not too different from the present tenses. One important thing to remember when teaching the past tenses is that the verb 'to be' has two forms in simple past, according to person, was and were. WAS is used with I, he, she, and it; whereas WERE is used with you, we and they. All other verbs stay the same for all persons. However, MANY verbs in English are irregular in the past simple, and students will be required to simply memorize them. When planning to teach lessons around the past tense, it is important to include multiple opportunities for students to practice hearing and using irregular past tense verbs correctly.
