In Unit 11, I learned about the four basic skills in any language. Receptive skills include reading and listening and productive skills include speaking and writing. They are all equally important. We understand and process words based on 'pre existent knowledge' to gain a true understanding. Readers and listeners hold a great amount of special skills and understanding the context will depend on their expertise in predictive skills, scanning, skimming, detailed information and deduction from context.
Listening and reading can result in problems that need to be addressed. The first way to approach language difficulty pre-teaching vocabulary, where you teach them difficult/unknown language and structures, prior to starting a reading or listening activity.
Non authentic texts should be chosen to help students gain confidence with their skills.
It is important that a variety of topics are used to keep the students interested and motivated. You must get an understanding of what interests your students as it will assist you in choosing the best material for the class. Use pictures, dialogues, and having them engage in activities will help keep them interested.
When teaching receptive skills, it is important to use comprehension tasks to promote understanding. For example, a common activity is jigsaw reading where students are placed in pairs and each one read part of the text, then they share their information to complete the task.
