Unit 15 focused on evaluation and testing inside and outside of the classroom. In this chapter, I learned about placement tests, diagnostic tests, progress tests, practice tests and general external examinations. Tests are used for a variety of reasons: to evaluate the progress students are making and find out what information they are retaining, to see what language level they are at, to see what information they do and don't know at the beginning of a course and many other reasons. The general external examinations are not done at school and are typically used to evaluate students' reading, listening, speaking and writing skills in order to be accepted into a college in an English speaking country or used when people are applying for a job and English will be used. As a student, I remember feeling very nervous about taking tests and never liked them. I agree with one point that was made that said exams don't test your knowledge but test your memorization skills. In the future when my students take tests, I want to prepare them to the best of my ability and give practice tests so they will feel ready for the real progress exam.
