Another one of those things where native speakers know everything subconsciously! Direct speech to reported speech is one of the skills where a lot of learners stumble, and I have found that the best way to approach this topic was to drill, without the technical terms. Perhaps there is another way to approach this? That said, as a practitioner, it was very useful for me to be exactly aware of every technical term.
