Understanding the chronological distinctions of the different past tenses is are important to emphasize within the learning context. Whether first introducing a beginner to these various tenses or simply reviewing them with a more advanced student, I think going over the precise meaning and distinctions of each of the past tenses is never an exercise in vain. Even as a native English speaker, I find a good review to be helpful! On another note, after reviewing the number of irregular verb forms for simple and participial forms, I am inspired to find alternative ways to provide exercises for learning. As a Germanic language, modern English brings with it an inordinate amount of irregular verb forms otherwise not found in Romance or Slavic languages (I'm not so familiar with other language families outside of these). Perhaps the only way to assist students to surmount this challenge is old fashioned, rote learning...
