What did I learn about teaching receptive skills?
1. Four basic language skills - Reading, listening, speaking and writing. The development of all language skills is crucial.
2. Receptive skills – Receptive skills are reading and listening.
3. Adopt a balanced approach – Teachers should try to incorporate language activities which require students to utilize and therefore develop all four language skills.
Ways to overcome potential problems when teaching receptive skills:
1. Choose a variety of interesting topics for lessons. Students are more likely to participate when they read or listen to something that interests them.
2. In addition to choosing interesting topics, teachers should select texts (and tasks) that are appropriate and suitable for the language level of the students.
3. In the Engage stage, the teacher may use various teaching materials such as visual aids (e.g. pictures, videos and music) to make the lesson interesting and therefore encourage student participation.
4. In the Study stage, the teacher can reduce possible language difficulties by pre-teaching vocabulary before the reading or listening activity.
5. Include comprehension tasks that promote, as well as check understanding.
