What I learned about evaluation and testing
1. Students’ language levels may be assessed by means of tutorials,
evaluation by the students (through questionnaires and/or discussions),
and tests.
2. It can be useful for schools/teachers to make use of various types of
tests for various purposes.
3. Placement tests may be used to determine which class to place a new
student according to their language ability.
4. Progress tests can be used to find out what language has been
remembered or forgotten by the students, so that teachers can address
their language needs accordingly.
5. Diagnostic tests are useful in determining what the students already
know, so that the teacher is able to prepare lessons and materials that
address the language needs of the students.
6. Practice tests are an effective way to prepare students for external
exams as the format and structure of the tests are similar to that of
external tests.
7. It is important to be aware of the various external examinations (e.g.
TOEFL, IELTS, TOEIC), so that teachers can prepare students for
them.
