In this lesson, I learned about the receptive skills, reading and listening. We use receptive skills in two main ways. The first is for a purpose, and this is when we want to achieve a particular aim or goal. The other is for entertainment and we use receptive skills here because we find it enjoyable, i.e. watching a movie.
In reading and listening, we use different methods to extract meaning from texts based on our goals. We have predictive skills, like guessing the content of an article from a headline, scanning skills, where we search for specific information, skimming skills, where we read or listen to a large text to get a general understanding of it, and detailed analysis, where we read a text closely to understand it in detail.
In presenting texts to class, it is a good idea to pre-teach them certain, difficult vocabulary so that they can better understand a certain text. It is also important to carefully select the types of texts to teach to ensure that students get an exposure to a wide variety of topics, that all students will be interested in at least some of the texts presented and that the texts are at an appropriate language level.
