This Unit was about Future Tenses. As I mentioned before, though I grew up and went to school in the United States, and therefore attended a American High School (with French School in the afternoons as my whole family is French), we never properly learned the names and usages of each tense. Therefore, I learned a lot in this unit, making my own little cheat sheet to review. There are a 5 future tenses: the future simple (I + will), the future continuous (I + will + verb(ing)), the future perfect (I + will + have + verb(ed)), ‘the going to future’ (be going + infinitive verb) and the future perfect continuous (will + have + been + verb(ing)). These all have different uses that I will not go into now. Interestingly, I also reencountered the present simple and present continuous. These two tenses can have a future meaning in certain cases. The Present Simple, for example, is used for timetables and schedules, while the present continuous is used for definite arrangements or decisions and plans without a tie frame. Explaining this to new English learners is daunting but the “Teaching Ideas” portion for each is invaluable.
