What I learned about course books and lesson materials
1. Course books can be useful in teaching English to students, but they are
not sufficient and should always be supplemented with additional
teaching materials (authentic and created materials).
2. The use of carefully selected authentic materials (e.g. magazines,
newspapers, songs, films on video, etc.) in lessons can make classroom
activities more interesting and therefore motivate students to take part in
classroom activities.
3. Created materials (e.g. crosswords, word search puzzles, flashcards,
etc.) are useful as they can be created to address and meet the specific
language needs of the students.
4. There are both advantages and disadvantages to using course books in
lessons, however, teachers should make the best use of them.
The teacher can do this by a) selecting the most suitable course book for the
students; b) choosing items and activities that will motivate students; c)
approaching the book critically; d) using additional materials with the
course book; and e) adjusting the course material according to the needs
of the learners.
5. When using the course book, the teacher should a) carefully omit
lessons that are not suitable or beneficial to the students; b) replace
course materials with materials that are more suitable and appropriate
for the students; c) supplement the course material with additional
material to provide extra language practice for students; and d) adapting
the material by teaching the content in a way that is appropriate for the
students.
