Frankenmuth, Michigan TESOL Online & Teaching English Jobs
The main reason for my taking this course is due to my lack in grammatical knowledge. Grammar is by far the part of teaching I fear the most. I grew up in a home speaking two languages fluently. I remember in my own school days, a foreign student asking me what a rule was or why something was the way it is, and I couldn’t answer her – because I simply knew what I had been taught to say. Now again, working in Korea, I find Korean teachers occasionally also asking me questions I can’t answer. As a teacher I don’t mind being asked a question I don’t know the answer to (I can’t know everything), but as an English teacher I always fear being asked a grammar question I can’t answer – I don’t want them to lose their confidence in me.
In this unit, I really appreciated that everything was introduced from the absolute basics. There is so much I need to learn and retain, and it reminds me of the pressure my students are under, but equips me to help them and become a better teacher myself.
When I hear the words parts of speech, I cringe. But as I read through the materials I found myself amazed at how I knew many rules without knowing how. Although, I also came to understand that I write the same way I speak, which is often not grammatically correct, as I tend to speak as I do in my South African dialect rather than formal English. This has encouraged me to improve my English!
I have just been teaching Comparatives, and was delighted to now learn from this unit how to explain when to use the word more. I was also aware of verbs that were not simply actions, and couldn’t identify what they were. But thanks to this unit, I not only discovered state verbs, but also now understand transitive, intransitive and auxiliary verbs. I am battling with verb forms as I don’t understand how to define which is which. Although continually checking myself, I am slowly picking up on all the areas I need to relearn or remind myself.
