From this unit I have learnt that there is no "the best course book" since every course book has its fans and detractors, thus it is a complex issue to choose if a course book should be used, and which one it would be. In reality, teachers often have to create their own materials to supplement the course book or replace sections that are not suitable for the class.
Since being the real language, authentic materials are interesting and motivating, can be geared to the interests of a particular group of students, and provide students with more confidence to tackle real life material. However, the teacher will need to select them carefully as they are not graded for level.
Created materials, on the other hand, are graded to level of the students, thus especially suitable for the beginners. They can also be customized to replace or supplement unsuitable sections from a course book. However, this will take the teacher quite a bit of time for the material preparation/creation.
Using course books with a class has its own advantages and disadvantages. The teacher, therefore, can use the course book to maximum effect by:
- Choosing the most suitable one for his/her group of students, if it is the decision for him/her to make.
- not using the course book for the whole lesson, but choosing items which motivate students, and use replacements/supplements for sections which are not really suitable or beneficial for the students
- creating a balanced lesson for tasks
- looking at what the students need beside what the course book provides
- trying out new ideas and varying activities out of the course book
- approaching the course critically and look for difficulties that are not highlighted by the authors
