In the 'Equipment and teaching aids' lesson, I learned about the variety of equipment and materials that teachers use to enhance their lessons. A white board can be used to help students understand language points but teachers should be careful to write neatly and clearly, section off the board, use different colors, only put essential information on it, erase old material, avoid unnecessary capitalization and involve students in the writing process to use it effectively. Interactive whiteboards can also be effective but teachers should test and train with them before they use them in the class room, plan their lessons in accordance with the IWB and have a back up plan in case they don't work. Overhead projects can also be effective but teachers need to ensure that they prepare sheets well, write legibly, and incorporate them well into their lessons. Visual aids can also help in lessons through stimulating discussion, eliciting meaning more effectively and teaching new vocab items. While modern classrooms will be unlikely to have things like cassette recorders and video cassettes, incorporating audio and visual content into lessons can also be helpful in presenting authentic and other materials. Teachers should also be aware of resources, dictionaries and course books they can use in their lessons.
