In this lesson, I learned about how to teach past tenses and the past simple, past perfect, past continuous and past perfect continuous forms. I learned about the difference in regular and irregular forms and how they relate to the past simple form.
Past simple is used for past actions when a time is given or asked about and when an action clearly took place at a definite time even if the time itself isn't mentioned. Card games, story telling, CV's, and role plays can be effective ways to activate this tense.
The past continuous form is used when describing interrupted past actions, indicate gradual development in the past, and express an action that began before a time and is probably continuing. It is also often used in descriptions. A good activity to activate this tense is the use of diaries or telling stories.
The past perfect form uses had/had not to discuss actions that occurred before other actions in the past. The structure is also used to describe completely finished actions. A good way to activate this tense is through story telling or writing, providing students with a situation and asking them to think of reasons why it happened or asking students to tell a story backwards.
The past perfect continuous tense is used to discuss actions that had been taking place in the past up until the present moment. Students often forget to add the ing ending when using this structure.
