The use of equipment and teaching aids in the classroom 1. Teachers should incorporate a variety of teaching aids to make lessons interesting and effective. Textbooks or course books should not be the only teaching aid that is used by the teacher. 2. The board is one of the most used and effective teaching tool available in the classroom. It can be used for writing, drawing and projecting images from a projector. When using the board, the teacher should a) always write neatly and clearly so that students are able to read the teacher’s writing; b) use different colours and writing techniques (underlining and circling) to highlight certain language points; c) avoid unnecessary capitalization as writing should reflect natural writing; and d) involve students in the writing process. 3. Visual aids such as real objects, pictures, and photos are useful in the classroom. Through the use of visual aids, the teacher is able to a) illustrate meaning quickly and effectively; b) make lessons more interesting and therefore encourage discussions; and c) elicit the target language. Visual aids are easily accessible to teachers through magazines, newspapers, etc. 4. Worksheets and work cards are useful for reading and grammar exercises, as well as presenting new vocabulary. Word cards can be used for communication activities such as role-play. 5. Other useful teaching resources that the teacher can use are: interactive whiteboard (IWB), overhead projector (OHP), videos and DVDs, video camera, dictionaries, the cassette recorder, CD player, course books, photocopier, computers and online resources.
