I have learnt from this Unit that there are four things that English learners need to do with the new language: be exposed to it, understand its meaning, understand how it's structured, and be able to actively produce it. Also, the teachers have to ensure that Grammar, Vocabulary, and Functions of English are introduced/taught to the learners in a balanced and manageable way.
1. Teaching vocabulary:
Vocabulary is very important to the students, and their receptive vocabulary is much larger than their productive vocabulary.
How to select which words to teach is one of the biggest problems of vocabulary teaching, thus it's advisable for the teacher to consider the following characteristics of the words to be chosen: the appropriacy to the students and the tasks, the frequency and coverage, and the teachability. A chosen vocabulary item should be introduced to the students with its meaning, use, word grammar, interaction, spelling and pronunciation.
2. Teaching grammatical structures:
When being introduced to any language structure, the students will need to know:
- What the language means
- How/when it is used
- Its grammatical forms and patterns
- How it is said/written
3. Teaching language functions:
Language functions refer to the purposes in which the language is used to communicate, such as inviting, refusing, suggesting, complaining, etc. The appropriacy of the kind of language to be used in different functions should also be covered in this teaching.
Since these lessons stress the need for activation of language, role-plays are very useful in the activate stage of the lessons.
