In Unit 6, we focused on the past tense systems and structures. First, I learned that past simple forms are used to for actions that were completed at a definite time in the past. For example, "the boat arrived five minutes late." Some irregular past simple forms include: see/saw, do/did, eat/ate, etc. These are verbs that cannot add ed to the end. Activities that can be used to activate irregular verbs are narrative story telling, card games, interview role plays, etc.
Past Continuous forms always require some form of time reference. It can indicate gradual development that took place in the past. For example: It was getting darker. Some activate activities include the use of diaries or journals, detective games, or narrative stories using visuals.
Past Perfect forms are the "past in the past." For example: Paula was upset because Tom hadn't reached out. Activate activities include story telling and situation analysis.
Past Perfect Continuous forms are not often used. They talk about actions in the past that had been going on continuously up to the past moment that we are thinking about. For example: Before eating dinner, she had been working for twelve hours.
