What did I learn about teaching productive skills?
1. Speaking and writing are known as productive skills.
2. The purpose of speaking and writing is to communicate with others.
3. The development of accuracy and fluency in speaking is equally important.
4. The teacher may focus on accuracy in the Study stage by incorporating controlled activities (drilling techniques) and guided activities (model dialogues).
5. The teacher may develop fluency in students by incorporating creative communication activities such as free role-playing, information gap and communication games.
6. The teacher should encourage student interaction by creating a comfortable atmosphere where students get plenty of practice, and include classroom activities such as pair-work and group-work.
7. When teaching writing skills to the students, the teacher needs to consider factors such as handwriting, spelling, layout and punctuation, and creative writing.
8. Games are a great and fun way to teach the target language, English. Games can be adapted for communicative and/or linguistic development purposes.
9. Games are useful for teaching and learning English and therefore teachers should incorporate them as part of their syllabus.
10. The teacher may use interesting games such as Hangman and Pictionary during the Engage stage.
