The past simple tense uses did plus the past form of the verb usually the verb +ed. With the irregular verbs we need to memories them if we're not familiar with some of them. We construct past perfect by using had with the past participle form of the verb. The continuous and perfect continuous uses the present participle form of the verb. The difference between the two is that the perfect continuous uses two auxiliary verbs.
