This unit helped me understand the importance of the teachers role in a classroom and the different ways to understand learners. The teacher first and foremost must be motivated and open. Without motivation, patience, and energy in the classroom, the students will not learn as effectively as is possible. Secondly, the teacher must understand the different roles of a teacher and when each role is appropriate. A balance between different roles is important in order to create an classroom atmosphere in which learning occurs, as well as assessment of student progress. Of course, a good teacher always hopes to have good learners, which would be identified as students willing to ask questions, willing to speak and experiment with the language, and motivation to learn the language. Next, I learned about the differences between adult and young learners. Although my first assumption was that adult learners would be easier to teach on all accounts, young learners also have many advantages, such as a lack of inhibitions in speaking and not having the knowledge to compare their second language with their native language, which can make it easier for the brain to adapt to the new language. Adult learners, on the other hand, have the advantage that they probably decided on their own to learn English, giving them a great sense of motivation, they have life experiences to bring to the classroom, and the shouldn't struggle with behavior issues, as young learners might. Lastly I learned about the levels of language and the motivation and reasons students might have for wanting to learn English. The language levels are an important guideline to understand the progress of your students and to understand what must be worked on in order to proceed to the next level. The motivation of English learners can vary, but often includes such instances as wanting to travel the world, study abroad, work in English, or communicate better with colleagues or family. Overall this unit has provided me with a basic understanding of what it takes to be an English teacher and the challenges that might arise from the classroom environment and the dynamic between the teacher and the learners.
