Learning and teaching have a delicate balance in the classroom. Ultimately they both have the same goal, a successful progression of language learning. A teach can have many roles in the classroom and different ones may be better suited for the lesson but they all aim to provide continuous learning for the students. The reason it is important to try different approaches in because everyone learns differently and some students may take to certain teach styles better than other ones. Practicing all of them can give a well rounded experience to both the teacher and the students, which can be a good way to engage everyone equally. The classroom should be an environment of inclusion and safety for all learners so that they can feel comfortable to step out of their comfort zone when experimenting with a foreign language or if they need to ask questions about the lesson.
It is important for teachers and students to work together along their journey. The students should have a good motivation to learn, however if they do not the teacher should be able to recognize that and find a way to reach the students without being patronizing or discouraging them further. The students have nearly as much responsibility for their own learning in the classroom as the teacher does. It is important for students to have a desire to experiment with language so that they might be more open to finding their own voices and expressing themselves in their own way. Likewise an acceptance of error correction is a necessary quality, because it is important for students to understand that it is not personal, but a vital part of the language learning process designed to help them. Adult learners and young learners have their own sets of advantages and challenges as learners. Although not mutually exclusive, adults may be more motivated but more apprehensive about language learning; while young learners may be more willing to accept rules and structures of a new language, they may lack motivation. The teacher should consider these factors and adjust accordingly.
