Lesson 5 talks about the important skill of classroom management. Good classroom management means organizing and managing a class, conducting yourself in a friendly and relaxed manner and being able to maintain discipline with all students. This lesson focused on the importance of eye contact and gestures in the classroom, how to best arrange the classroom for different activities and group students together, how to increase student talk time (STT) and decrease teacher talk time (TTT), the best ways to establish rapport between teachers and students and lastly how to maintain discipline in the classroom. This lesson was very useful, especially the sections on maintaining discipline and how to reduce teacher talk time. I think this chapter was a good reminder that when giving instructions, I should use language at a lower level than what is being taught, ask the students to repeat the instructions instead of asking them if they understand and most importantly just keep things simple. I want to practice these skills to make sure that I am letting the students talk and practice English as much as possible. I also worry about disciplining students and I really like the suggestions that lesson 5 provided such as acting immediately and focusing on the behavior and not the student. Overall this chapter was engaging and I am taking away many helpful tips so that I can improve my classroom management skills.
