Unit 1 describes the meanings of a "teacher" and a "learner", the different roles each of them will fulfill, and what characteristics of each will foster effective learning.
A good teacher's primary focus will be the effective learning of the students. That means:
>The teacher has a genuine care and concern for the student, no matter the situation, background, or ability of the student.
>The teacher will be careful to have an accurate knowledge of the material to increase the efficiency of the teaching and to not confuse or hamper the student's learning in any way.
>A good teacher will be willing to take on a variety of roles for the sake of maximizing the effectiveness of learning, in order to enhance motivation, and to be mindful that each student has his/her own best way of learning the material.
>A good teacher will be mindful of the known background of each student and what is affecting the student's ability to learn. The teacher will be able to assess the current level of each student, and will have a willingness to point out and help students in areas where their understanding is weak or lacking in a patient and encouraging way.
>A good teacher is one that inspires students to want to learn the language, to expand their horizons, to experiment and be self motivated, and to generally be those who are an asset to their own country and society resulting in a positive influence on the world itself. The teacher will do this in a way that he or she does not impose his/her own opinions/ideas on the students, but rather the teacher fosters an environment where the student feels safe and comfortable to produce these results of his/her own accord.
