What I learned from the demonstration classes:
1.Teacher’s attitude affects student participation - Teachers should have a positive attitude. Gestures such as smiling help create a positive atmosphere and therefore allow students to feel comfortable in the classroom.
2.Lessons should include ESA elements – Always begin a lesson with an Engage phase to introduce the topic or content of the lesson. This also allows the students to ease into the lesson and use the target language. Include activities (worksheets) in the Study phase where students can practice what they have learned. This will allow students to be able to produce the target language learned in the Activate stage.
3.Demonstrate activities – Giving a clear demonstration on how to do an activity reduces confusion and allows students to participate effectively in classroom activities.
4.Learn students’ names – knowing each student’s name allows the teacher to effectively involve all the students in the lesson by calling out each student for a response.
5.Make use of various teaching materials – Using a whiteboard allows the teacher to teach the content effectively as well as develop the student’s writing skills as they are required to make notes during the lesson.
6.Teacher’s response and feedback – Teachers should always have a positive attitude toward students and their responses. Praising students when they give the correct answer may encourage participation.
Teacher’s voice – Teachers should speak clearly and at the appropriate speed and level so that students are able to comprehend what the teacher is saying.
