Although maybe a little clumsy sounding, is the following sentence grammatically acceptable as a way of saying that an action will be finished before a certain time in the future (in this case, 'tomorrow afternoon')?: "I'll finish by tomorrow afternoon" So I think it comes down to the message. If you want to describe your state of being "done" then I will have finished or I will be done, but if you want to name when the person can count on the project being finished (compared to you being finished with it), then your original works.
