Unit 13 was a very long and detailed unit on pronunciation and phonology. It is said that pronunciation is usually not taught in english lessons, which I find surprising because pronunciation of English is so difficult for a lot of students. I think it´s so difficult because there are no clear rules in English on which letters build which phoneme ( for example bear and hear - here the two letters ea form two different phonemes).
The unit goes into detail on different aspects of the phonology. A very big part is on intonation and stress. With intonation we can indicate a listener if we want him to answer or even that we do not want to speak to him at all. Stress can help us emphasize important aspects of our sentences.
The text also introduces phonemes and shows a chart of all the phonemes. I thought this was useful and interesting because often a dictionary gives the phonetic spelling of a word but sometimes it is difficult for me to deduct the correct pronunciation from that.
The last part was on articulation and how to form certain sounds through movment of the lips or tongue or through breathing.I thought the mouth diagrams were particularly interesting.
