This unit gave basic background information about many ESL teaching methodologies and the theory behind them. Then, it gave an in-depth explanation of one method that is best suited for new teachers: ESA. ESA stands for Engage, Study, Activate. In a basic ESA lesson, the teacher will go through the stages in order. In the engage stage, students should be encouraged to speak in the target language. This stage should be considered a warm-up, where students are engaging in the target language but no new content is being taught. In this stage, it is not important to worry about error-correction. The study stage is when new content is introduced, and this can be the more teacher-focused time of the lesson. The last stage, activate, is when the students should practice the new language they've learned. Some ideas for this stage include role-play activities and creative activities like creating a poster or advertisement. As long as the first stage is engage and the last stage is activate, teachers can have multiple of each stage and mix-up the order.
