Unit seven focused on vocabulary, grammar and functions. Teaching vocabulary is important to students. How difficult a vocabulary item is will depend on spelling, pronunciation, similarity to their native language and English words already known. Additionally, the vocabulary should apply to the students, be appropriate for the task, teachability, frequency and coverage. students need to know the meaning, use, grammar, interaction, spelling and pronunciation. The engagement stage may include pictures, contrast, discussion, discovery, mime and action to elicit and explain meaning. The study phase can include gap-fill work, word searches, crosswords, matching exercises, example sentences, pronunciation exercises and text studies. The activate phase can include debate, text material creation, story building, simulation, role-play and class discussion. Any ESA lesson can move fluidly in and out of different stages between study and activate. Every lesson must begin with the engage stage and end with an activate stage. When teaching grammar they need to know the meaning, use, for, pattern as well as spoken and written form. The engage stage can include discussion, scenario building, prompting, pictures, drawings, real objects, mime and question/answer. The study phase. can include intonation and pronunciation patterns, context, drilling, gap fills, information gaps, sentence word order and sentences building. Finally, the activate stage would include communication games, role-play, story building and discussion/debate.
