Unit 1 is on teachers and learners. First it describes the different roles of a teacher in the classroom. The second part is on the different learners, their motivation and also on their prospective levels of language proficiency.
In the first part the text gives examples of nine different roles, which the teacher might have during a lesson. Among them are the assessor (feedback and grading), the monitor (classroom behavior and activities) and maybe the most important role, the model (providing an accurate source of real life English).
Part two focuses on the learner and explains what is important for a teacher to keep in mind while teaching different learners. There can be differences in age which might have different effects on motivation, nervousness or behavior. There are also different levels of language proficiency. There´s a system describing learners on a range from beginners to advanced. The other system uses letters and numbers (starting with A.1 and ranging to C.2).
I´m assuming the different roles of teachers also change depending on the learners (level, behavior, etc), for example learners with a lower language proficiency might need more guidance from the teacher compared to advanced learners.
