This unit explains the four present tenses: present simple, present continuous, present perfect, and present perfect continuous. The present simple is used to describe habits, patterns, instructions, present stories, and facts. The present continuous is used to describe actions in progress, developing situations, background events in a present story, and to refer to regular actions that occur around a specific time. The present perfect and present perfect continuous both connect past actions to the present. The present perfect is used to talk about general experiences one has had, things that began in the past and are still true, and past actions with present results. The present perfect continuous is used to describe and ongoing activity that is expected to continue and to describe a recently finished action with present results. This form emphasizes the action itself and not the result.
