Goodridge, Minnesota TESOL Online & Teaching English Jobs
This unit explained what makes a good teacher and learner, and the different ways the teacher can engage in the classroom. Some attributes of a good teacher include content knowledge, being kind and patient, engaging all students in the lesson, and caring about the students' progress. Some attributes of a good learner are willingness to ask questions, willingness to listen to the foreign language, willingness to participate, and a desire to learn. The teacher can interact in the class as a manager, assessor, facilitator, organizer, tutor, prompter, participant, model, or observer. All these roles are important so the teacher should incorporate all these roles. The amount of time in each role will depend on the type of class and the type of students.
This unit also went over the language ability levels: beginner, elementary, low-intermediate, intermediate, upper-intermediate, and advanced. The type of activities and lessons a teacher selects should be appropriate for the students' level. Also, depending on the type of student there will be unique challenges and strengths of the class. For example, adult learners tend to be more motivated than young learners, but young learners tend to be more willing to experiment and be corrected than older learners who may be nervous about "losing face". Overall, this unit gave an overview of the types of classroom dynamics that might be present for a teacher in a TEFL/TESOL classroom.
