This unit briefly went over modals, phrasal verbs, and passive voice. There are many modals and some phrases that function like modals although they are not "true modals". Modals express a variety of ideas such as obligation, possibility, permission, ability, and advice. They can also convey degrees of formality. Modal verbs are followed by a verbs base form in present and future, and past tense can change depending on the modal. Modals such as may, might, can, could, may, and be able to are some common examples. Passive voice shifts the focus of the sentence from the performer of an action to the thing the action is performed on. The direct object is placed in the subject position, the auxiliary verb "be" is added after all modals and before the past participle from of the verb. The performer can be added with a "by" prepositional phrase but is unnecessary, therefore the passive voice is often used when the performer is unimportant or unknown. Finally, phrasal verbs are an important subject because they are very common in English. Phrasal verbs are made up of a verb and one to two particles such as a preposition or adverb. There are three types: intransitive, transitive separable, and transitive inseparable. Once phrasal verbs are taught it is important to use them in natural speech around students so they become comfortable with this type of multi-word verb.
