Unit 18 was a ridiculous unit with regard phrasal verbs. Four questions were directly linked to this subject and there was approximately one page of very unspecific information and no additional information in the unit video. Never mind the fact that it is stated in the introductory paragraph that years of studying are required for mastery. Regardless, this is what I learned. The modal auxiliary verbs include can, could, may, might, shall, should, will, would, must, have got to, need to needn't,t and ought to. Modals are used to express obligation, possibility/probability, permission/prohibition, ability and advice. Modal verbs can also express formality and are followed by a verb in it's base form in both the present and future. Teaching ideas include role play, rules, and signs. The unit also covered the passive voice in which the object of an active verb becomes the subject of the passive verb. It's form is auxiliary verb "be" + past participle. The passive voice is most frequently used when it is not known, not important, to we don't want to say exactly who performs the action. Teaching ideas include active/passive sentences match or students can create a quiz on the subject. Relative clauses is a group of words containing a subject and a verb. The three categories include independent clause, dependent clause and relative clause. An independent clause os a complete sentence the contains the main subject and verb a sentence. A dependent clause is not a complete sentence but must be connection to an independent clause. Finally, a relative clause is a dependent clause that modifies a noun. Finally, the final section covers phrasal verbs of which there are three types. Intransitive phrasal verbs cannot be followed by a direct object. With transitive separable (Type 2) phrasal verbs an object pronoun can only come between the verb and the particle.
