Reading and listening are receptive skills. There are two main reasons students use receptive skills: for a purpose or for entertainment. When listening or reading, people use a variety of receptive skills such as prediction, scanning, skimming, deduction, and detailed understanding. It is important to address all the different skills and reasons when teaching listening and reading to students. Depending on the class and reason for study, perhaps other skills are more important to the students and should be focused on. For example, a study prep class might want to focus on detail-oriented skimming and prediction and deduction skills for written texts. When selecting texts for class, teachers should consider pre-teaching difficult vocabulary and select texts appropriate to the students level, knowledge, and interests. It is also important to build comprehension activities into the lesson, such as a "reading jigsaw", rather than just ask if students have understood the material.
