Unit 20 covered troubleshooting in the classroom. A first time teacher may receive either an establish group or an existing group. In a new group, the students may not know one another and some work will need to be done to establish rapport with students and students with one another. In an existing group the students are more likely to know one another, are comfortable with the class and familiar with the EFL teaching. Regardless, teachers should establish rapport with students, get familiar with the lives of their students, find out about student motivation to learn English and find out the level of every student.
Activities to break the ice can include questionnaires/surveys, "tell us about" game, pass the ball and needs analysis. Warmers for lessons can include hangman, Pictionary, tongue twisters and memory games. Students may be a various levels within a class. To maintain engagement in those situations use different materials, same material/different tasks (differentiation) and pair stronger students with weaker ones (heterogeneous groups).
To manage large classes use worksheets, pair/group work, provide clarification, choral repetition, assign group leaders and prepare humorous/involving lessons. Most importantly, it is imperative to not resort to the students' native language. To do so make sure that activities are at an appropriate level, give clear explanations, encourage the use of English and constantly remind students.
Reluctant students can be motivated by using plenty of pair work, controlled student practice, role play and tape recorders. Listening texts should not be avoided because it will help tremendously with receptive listening skills. With regard to other issues that may come up, the teacher should resort to what their instinct is telling them to do. Just smile and enjoy the class and they will enjoy it too.
