Unit 12 discusses productive skills which include speaking and writing. When dealing with productive skills accuracy activities concentrate ob producing correct language. Fluency activities concentrate on allowing the students to experiment and be creative with language. effectiveness and flow are the keys. Both accuracy and fluency are of equal importance and both can be practiced through guided activities.. Accuracy based activities are controlled by the teacher and include drilling and prompting. Creative communication are fluency based activities and include free role-play, discussions, information gap, debates, debates, simulations and communication games. Techniques for encouraging student interaction include pair-work, group-work, lots of controlled activities before fluency activities, purposeful speaking, change of classroom dynamics, careful planning and allowing think time for students. there are several guidelines for a free/ creative speaking activity. Before the lesson, the aim should be decided, predict what students bring to the table, determine length, prepare materials and determine instructions, After the activit,y provide feedback.
When teaching writing, attention should be focused on handwriting, spelling, layout and punctuation as well as creative writing.
Games in the classroom, competitive and individual both, are popular and can provide useful controlled practice as well as free practice material. a good language school will have a wide variety of of game books in their resource center.
