This unit covered the topic of teaching productive skills: speaking and writing. The unit distinguished between accuracy and fluency, the former being the correctness of the language produced and the latter being the effectiveness and flow of the language produced. Accuracy is important during the Study phase, when the teacher controls the activity to ensure that students are reproducing the language accurately, while fluency is important during the Activate stage, when the teacher is more concerned with students being able to creatively and easily use the language. The unit gave tips and examples of how to elicit creative speaking and writing from students, such as giving students as much preparation time as they need, making sure of their understanding during the controlled portion of the lesson, and giving them topics that interest and motivate them.
