This unit gave me a broad overview of the methodologies for teaching ESL, describing what each methodology entailed, its theory of learning, and its pros and cons. The unit identified key requirements for learning across all methodologies, including exposure to the language, feedback from the teacher, student-led discovery of the language, student comfort, and a combination of real communicative tasks and controlled practice. The unit then provided concrete examples and guidelines for an ESA (Engage, Study, and Activate) lesson plan, which incorporates all of those key requirements by easing students into the language lesson with a fun activity (Engage), then giving them a controlled practice with lots of feedback (Study), and then giving them an opportunity to fluently and freely produce language using what they just learned (Activate).
